Inventions of the Future:Breakup Goggles

That’s it, she thought. That’s the last time he says something like that to me.

Sara rolled over and fished the goggles out of her purse. She had purchased them weeks ago but had been reluctant to put them on. Now, she was sure it was the right thing to do. Satisfaction surged through her as micro needles on the frame pumped chemicals into her blood. She felt comforted as the earpieces wound around and into her ear canals.

The room around her looked different somehow. There was a lumpy, slightly smelly, naked, unattractive boy staring at her. She started to get dressed.

“No! Listen to me, you have got to take those things off! They’re dangerous. They distort your perceptions.”

She wanted to laugh about his squeaky silly voice but she managed to keep a straight face. She found her shoes and put them on. They looked really cute with her dress.

“Listen, just now, I was just joking. I didn’t mean it baby. Really I didn’t.”

She didn’t bother to reply as she grabbed her purse and walked out the door. It was a lovely spring day and everyone she met smiled at her.

“Hey, you can’t just walk out into the rain like that! It’s pouring!”

She couldn’t remember his name. He might have been amusing for a very short while but she only remembered how insipid and boring he had become.

The walk back to her flat was pleasant and sunny. Half a block before her building she was caught in a light shower. Oh, well, she thought, I’ll just dry off when I get in.

She had to leave her clothes in the bathtub, they were soaking wet. She used two towels to dry herself. That’s odd, she thought, I was only a little damp when I came in.

She tried to remove the goggles. They would not come off. Sara smiled at herself in the mirror. They looked good on her. Maybe she should try them out for a couple of weeks.

When she walked into the kitchen she noticed pictures of that annoying boy on the refrigerator. Why would she want to keep those? After she tossed them in the trash she went through her entire flat gathering up things he had left. She also deleted several inane voice mails.

She didn’t need anyone to tell her everything would be ok. Everything was ok now.
